Staffordshire Child’s Mug
An early child’s mug decorated with quotes from “Poor Richard’s Almanac”, circa 1860.
At the top, it states “not to oversea workmen is to leave them your purse open”. Around the bottom, it has “if you would have a faithful servant, and one that you like, serve yourself”.
Richard Saunders (of the almanac) was the pen name of Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s founding fathers. For twenty years, his mix of weather forecasts, household hint and witty quotes was a best seller.
The mug is 70mm high and in excellent condition.
